Your Biology Is Not an Accident
Before the first microscope was built, before Watson and Crick sketched their double helix, before the Human Genome Project mapped 3.2 billion base pairs of human DNA, a shepherd-king sat under the stars and wrote something that modern science is still catching up to. "I will praise You," David wrote, "for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; marvelous are Your works, and that my soul knows very well." — Psalm 139:14
That declaration was not poetry dressed up as biology. It was a theological claim about the nature of the human body: it is not random, not accidental, not the product of blind forces assembling themselves into complexity. It is the work of a Creator who designed with intention, precision, and care. And the more deeply science peers into the architecture of the human cell, the harder it becomes to argue otherwise.

The Genome: 3.2 Billion Letters, Zero Typos
Every cell in your body (roughly 37 trillion of them) contains a complete copy of your genome. That genome is written in a four-letter chemical alphabet (adenine, thymine, cytosine, guanine) arranged in sequences of approximately 3.2 billion base pairs. If you printed that sequence in standard book format, it would fill roughly 200 volumes the size of a telephone directory. Your body reads, copies, and executes that instruction set in every dividing cell, every day, with extraordinary fidelity.
The error rate during DNA replication is approximately one mistake per billion base pairs copied, and even those rare errors are caught and corrected by dedicated proofreading enzymes before they can cause harm. Your cells experience between 10,000 and 1,000,000 molecular lesions per day from metabolic byproducts, environmental exposures, and normal cellular activity. Multiple specialized repair pathways (base excision repair, nucleotide excision repair, mismatch repair, and double-strand break repair) work continuously to identify and correct each one. The 2015 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded specifically for mapping these mechanisms, which researchers described as exhibiting "astounding complexity."
This is not a system that assembled itself by chance. This is engineering at a scale that dwarfs anything human civilization has produced.
Alternative Splicing: One Gene, Thousands of Proteins
Here is where the design becomes even more remarkable. The human genome contains approximately 20,000 to 25,000 protein-coding genes. For decades, scientists assumed that meant roughly 20,000 to 25,000 proteins. They were wrong by orders of magnitude.
Through a process called alternative splicing, a single gene can produce hundreds or even thousands of distinct protein variants by rearranging which segments (exons) are included in the final messenger RNA. The human genome is estimated to produce hundreds of thousands of distinct protein products from those 20,000 genes. One gene involved in neuronal development, DSCAM, can theoretically generate more than 38,000 different protein isoforms through alternative splicing alone.
This is biological data compression of breathtaking elegance. The genome stores instructions for a vast array of proteins within a streamlined, efficient program, and the "splicing code" that governs which variant is produced in which tissue, at which developmental stage, in response to which signals, is itself encoded in the non-coding regions of the genome that were once dismissed as "junk DNA." Those regions, it turns out, are not junk. They are regulatory architecture.
David did not know about exons. He did not know about splicing factors or regulatory motifs. But he knew that the body he inhabited was the work of a mind far greater than his own. Modern molecular biology is simply providing the footnotes.
The Epigenome: Where Your Choices Speak to Your Genes
The genome is the hardware. The epigenome is the software, and unlike the genome, it is responsive. The mechanism appears to be the nervous system: by reducing the perceived threat signal that activates the sympathetic nervous system, contemplative practices reduce the downstream biochemical cascade that would otherwise trigger inflammatory gene expression.
For people of faith, this is not surprising. Prayer is not merely a psychological comfort. It is a physiological event. Telomeres: The Biological Clock That Responds to How You Live
At the end of every chromosome sit telomeres, which are protective caps of repetitive DNA sequences that prevent chromosomal fraying during cell division. Each time a cell divides, telomeres shorten slightly. When they become critically short, the cell enters senescence or apoptosis. Telomere length is one of the most studied biomarkers of biological aging.
Research has found associations between religious involvement and telomere length. A 2016 study using data from the Nashville Stress and Health Study found that adults who regularly attend religious services, pray, and identify as religious tend to exhibit longer telomeres compared to those who do not. A 2025 systematic review of eight qualified studies found that three reported a positive relationship between religiosity and telomere length, while the literature overall remains mixed, reflecting the genuine complexity of measuring spiritual practice as a biological variable.
What is clearer is the mechanism by which spiritual practices might influence telomere biology: through stress reduction, community connection, and the downstream effects on cortisol, inflammation, and oxidative stress, all of which are established drivers of telomere attrition. The body does not distinguish between a stress-reducing practice that is secular and one that is sacred. But the sacred practice carries something the secular one does not: a framework of meaning, a sense of being known and held, a relationship with the One who designed the system in the first place.
Mitochondria: The Energy Engines God Built Into Every Cell
Your cells contain between a few hundred and several thousand mitochondria, which are organelles that generate the ATP (adenosine triphosphate) that powers virtually every biological process in your body. Mitochondria have their own DNA, separate from the nuclear genome, inherited exclusively through the maternal line. They are, in a very real sense, ancient partners in the project of human life.
Mitochondrial biogenesis, the creation of new mitochondria, is stimulated by physical exercise, particularly high-intensity interval training and resistance training. The process is mediated by PGC-1alpha, a master regulator that responds to metabolic stress by upregulating the genes needed to build new mitochondrial machinery. Exercise is, at the cellular level, a signal that tells your body to invest in its own energy infrastructure.
Chronic psychological stress, by contrast, impairs mitochondrial function. Elevated cortisol, persistent inflammation, and oxidative stress all degrade mitochondrial efficiency. Practices that reduce the stress burden (including prayer, community, rest, and contemplative practice) create the molecular conditions in which mitochondria can function and replicate optimally.
