They are in your drinking water, your cookware, your food packaging, and — with near certainty — your blood. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, better known as PFAS or "forever chemicals," have become one of the defining environmental health challenges of our generation. A landmark 1999–2000 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey found detectable PFAS in more than 99% of tested Americans, and while concentrations of the oldest compounds have declined since production phase-outs, PFAS exposure remains pervasive across every demographic and geography.
This is not a call to panic. Fear is not a health strategy. But it is a call to informed, proportionate action — the kind of faithful stewardship that Scripture invites us into. Understanding what PFAS are, where they come from, what the science actually says about their health effects, and what you can realistically do about them is the most powerful response available to us right now.
What Are PFAS — and Why Are They Called "Forever Chemicals"?
PFAS are a large family of more than 12,000 synthetic chemicals that have been manufactured and used in industrial and consumer products since the 1940s. Their defining characteristic is the carbon-fluorine bond — one of the strongest chemical bonds in nature. This extraordinary stability is what made PFAS so commercially valuable: they resist heat, water, oil, grease, and stains with remarkable effectiveness.
That same stability is also what makes them dangerous. Carbon-fluorine bonds resist ordinary environmental breakdown, meaning PFAS accumulate in soil, groundwater, wildlife, and the human body over decades. They do not biodegrade in any meaningful timeframe under normal conditions. Once they enter an ecosystem — or a human body — they stay.
The most studied PFAS compounds include PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid), historically used in Teflon manufacturing, and PFOS (perfluorooctane sulfonate), used in Scotchgard and firefighting foam. Both have been largely phased out in the United States, but thousands of replacement PFAS compounds are now in use — many with far less safety data.
Where Are You Being Exposed?
PFAS exposure is not a single-source problem. It enters our lives through multiple pathways simultaneously, which is part of what makes it so difficult to avoid entirely.
- Drinking water: Groundwater and public water systems near industrial facilities, military bases, airports, and fire-training areas are frequently contaminated. Aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF), used to fight fuel fires, is a major contamination source. Private well users are especially vulnerable because they bear responsibility for their own testing.
- Non-stick cookware: PFAS have been used in Teflon and similar coatings. Worn or scratched non-stick surfaces may release more compounds into food. Replacing damaged cookware with PFAS-free alternatives (cast iron, stainless steel, ceramic) is a practical precaution.
- Food packaging: Grease-resistant fast-food wrappers, pizza boxes, and microwave popcorn bags have historically contained PFAS. These compounds can migrate into food, particularly with heat.
- Stain-resistant textiles and carpets: Water-repellent clothing, stain-resistant carpets, and upholstery treatments often contain PFAS. Household dust from these materials can be a significant exposure route for young children.
- Occupational exposure: Firefighters, chemical manufacturing workers, and communities near PFAS-producing facilities face disproportionately higher exposures.

What Does the Science Say About Health Effects?
The research on PFAS health effects is substantial and growing — but it requires careful interpretation. Association in observational studies does not always establish direct causation, and findings for one PFAS compound do not automatically apply to the entire family of 12,000+ chemicals.
That said, the weight of evidence has raised legitimate concern across several health domains:
- Cancer risk: PFOA has been associated with kidney cancer in multiple studies. Evidence for testicular cancer is suggestive but less consistent. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified PFOA as a Group 1 carcinogen (carcinogenic to humans) in 2023.
- Immune suppression: Certain PFAS exposures have been associated with reduced antibody responses to vaccines in children — a finding with significant public health implications for immune resilience.
- Thyroid and hormonal disruption: PFAS can interfere with thyroid hormone binding and metabolism, with downstream effects on metabolism, energy, mood, and reproductive health.
- Pregnancy and birth outcomes: Research has linked PFAS exposure to pregnancy-induced hypertension, preeclampsia, and reduced birth weight.
- Neurodevelopmental harm: Prenatal PFAS can cross the placenta. Longitudinal studies have associated prenatal exposure with slower early communication, motor, and cognitive developmental trajectories — with some sex-specific patterns suggesting boys and girls may be affected differently.
The 2025 PNAS Study: $8 Billion in Annual Social Costs
One of the most significant recent studies on PFAS health consequences was published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) in December 2025 by researchers at the University of Arizona. Using a natural experiment design — comparing birth outcomes among mothers served by wells downgradient (downstream) from PFAS-contaminated sites versus upgradient wells — the researchers were able to reduce confounding from socioeconomic and lifestyle factors.
The findings were striking. Among the defined exposure groups, researchers reported estimated increases of:
- 191% in first-year infant mortality
- 168% in extremely preterm birth (before 28 weeks)
- 180% in extremely low birthweight (below 1,000 grams)
Extrapolating these findings nationally, the authors estimated at least $8 billion annually in social costs from PFAS in drinking water — including medical care, long-term developmental consequences, and reduced lifetime earnings. This is a conservative estimate covering only a subset of health effects.
This study does not prove that PFAS alone caused every individual outcome, and it was conducted in a specific geographic setting. But its causal-inference design is stronger than typical observational comparisons, and its findings align with a growing body of evidence pointing to PFAS as a serious threat to maternal and infant health.
The EPA's 2024 Drinking Water Standards
In April 2024, the EPA established the first-ever enforceable maximum contaminant levels (MCLs) for PFAS in public drinking water:
- 4 parts per trillion (ppt) for PFOA
- 4 parts per trillion (ppt) for PFOS
- 10 ppt for PFHxS, PFNA, and HFPO-DA (GenX)
- A hazard-index approach for certain PFAS mixtures
As of mid-2026, the regulatory landscape is evolving. EPA proposals would retain the PFOA and PFOS standards while potentially allowing compliance extensions toward 2031 for some water systems, and may rescind requirements for some of the other compounds. Proposals are not final rules — households should rely on current utility Consumer Confidence Reports and local testing rather than assuming any proposed change has already taken effect.
Can the Body Eliminate PFAS Naturally?
This is where honest science requires us to push back against some popular wellness narratives. PFAS do not behave like typical toxins that the liver transforms and excretes through standard Phase I and Phase II pathways. The central problem is their extraordinary persistence.
Some PFAS undergo enterohepatic cycling — they are excreted into bile, enter the intestine, and are then reabsorbed rather than eliminated. This cycling is part of why PFAS can remain in the body for years, with half-lives measured in years rather than days or weeks.
Here is what the current evidence actually supports:
- Dietary fiber: Adequate fiber supports bowel regularity and may help interrupt enterohepatic cycling by binding compounds in the gut before reabsorption. This is a reasonable general health practice — but it should not be marketed as a proven PFAS-clearing treatment.
- Hydration: Supports normal kidney function and overall health. Evidence that it materially lowers PFAS body burden is limited.
- Sweating and infrared sauna: Some PFAS have been detected in sweat, but evidence that sauna meaningfully reduces body burden is insufficient. Sauna carries risks for some populations, including pregnant women and those with certain medical conditions.
- Emerging probiotic research: Cambridge University researchers have identified microbial strains — 46-XY1 and 46-SL1 — that show PFAS-binding or bioaccumulation capacity in laboratory and animal studies. This is genuinely intriguing early-stage science, but these strains are not an FDA-approved human PFAS treatment. Do not purchase products claiming to "detox PFAS" based on this preliminary research.
The most evidence-supported strategy for reducing PFAS body burden is straightforward: reduce ongoing exposure. You cannot easily remove what is already there, but you can stop adding more.

A Practical PFAS Reduction Protocol
While no supplement or protocol can reliably remove PFAS from your body, there are meaningful steps you can take to reduce ongoing exposure and support your body's natural resilience:
- Test your water: Check your public utility's Consumer Confidence Report for PFAS data. If you use a private well — especially near a military base, airport, landfill, or industrial site — arrange testing through an accredited laboratory.
- Filter your water: Reverse osmosis (RO) systems and NSF/ANSI-certified activated carbon filters can significantly reduce PFAS in drinking water. Look for verified performance certifications, not vague "toxin removal" claims.
- Replace worn non-stick cookware: Switch to cast iron, stainless steel, or ceramic alternatives. You do not need to discard everything immediately — prioritize replacing scratched or heavily worn pieces.
- Reduce fast food and packaged food reliance: Grease-resistant packaging is a meaningful exposure source. Cooking whole foods at home in PFAS-free cookware is one of the most effective combined interventions.
- Eat a high-fiber, whole-food diet: Cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts), garlic, cilantro, and fiber-rich foods support gut health and regularity — which may help reduce enterohepatic reabsorption of some compounds.
- Choose PFAS-free products when practical: Look for stain-resistant clothing and carpets labeled PFAS-free. You do not need to replace everything at once — make intentional choices as items wear out.
- Support your liver and gut: While no supplement "detoxes" PFAS, supporting overall liver function and gut microbiome health through whole foods, adequate sleep, and stress management creates the best physiological environment for your body's natural processes.
